Minority Mental Health Awareness

Raising awareness about mental health is crucial for our overall well-being. By sharing personal experiences and reducing the stigma around mental illness, we can help those who suffer in silence and go untreated. In July, we observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. Unfortunately, minorities are less likely to receive a diagnosis and treatment for their mental illness, have less access to mental health services, and often receive poorer quality mental health care. To help raise awareness about these disparities, the ARDX Foundation® has organized a panel discussion on Minority Mental Health Awareness. The video will focus on the challenges children, adolescents, the community, and older adults face.

The discussion addresses the systemic issues of stigma, disparities, and racism. By raising awareness about these challenges, we can work towards creating a more equitable and compassionate society for everyone. The panelists, who are experts in the field of mental health, will discuss ways clinicians, the community, and individuals can address the issues of minority mental health.

The ARDX Foundation is honored to have four esteemed guests on our panel who will share their insights on Minority Mental Health. Dr. Brittny Gainey and Lawrence Holloway, both from Hampton Public Schools, are experts in counseling. Dr. LaConda Fanning, who leads JDEI at EVMS, is an LPC. Dr. Nedra Moncrief-Craig, the director of behavioral health for Sentara Healthcare, is particularly interested in mental health within minority geriatric communities. Their perspectives promise to shed light on this critical topic.

The moderator, Mitzi Glass, is a licensed clinical social worker and an ARDX Foundation board member. The ARDX Foundation’s mission is to advocate for mental and behavioral wellness through partnerships, education, mentorship, and change.
